Occasional login cookie glitch
« on: November 21, 2011, 06:49:34 AM »
I'm not 100% certain on the exact nature of this, but on occasion when attempting to log in, I'd receive a "unable to log in; check your cookie settings" message instead. I can't seem to figure out how to exactly replicate it, but over the few times it's happened to me over the past month, I can report the following:
  • This has happened in both Opera and Chrome (latest versions of each) running under Windows 7. (Unfortunately, as so far I've forgotten to check if the problem persists if I switch browser; it likely wouldn't since it appears to be cookie-related)
  • The problem, so far, has only occured when MiFur was not the first site I logged into that browser visit; indeed, it was usually one of the last ones.
  • So far, closing the browser and restarting a session fresh doesn't solve it. However, restarting with zero cookies invariably has solved it; this includes both actually deleting the cookie bank, as well as starting a fresh "incognito" session.

I've not been able to replicate this problem as of yet. I'll try a few other tricks but it might be a local machine issue.

I get this one as well.

Using Chrome: v15.0.874.121 m
Running: Win, Vista Home Premium, SP2.

To get past it I clear out my system using CCleaner v3.07.1457 to clear out my cache as well as all of my cookies and other build up. I could probably use the default Chrome system to do the same thing but I figure it's best to just clear out everything while I'm at it.

This all sounds like client side issues, if it was a problem with the site there would certainly be more reports.  The web server can't be expected to fix your computer, sorry.  Maybe you need more RAM to handle all of your open tabs?

I got this error today, actually. I also use Chrome, but I didn't have a problem until after I emptied my cache (for an unrelated reason).

What's odd is that it gave me that error three times, but when I came back a few hours later I was already logged in.

The only way I've been able to replicate this problem is with using multiple accounts on the same computer, having a window open with one account then trying to log out and log in in another window with another account while the first one is still logged in. If you're experiencing this problem and multiple people use the same computer for different accounts it may be related to a problem with the previous user not logging out and closing the window. I'm sort of at a loss as to how else it would happen. I'll keep digging around but I'm not sure I'll be able to find a solution to this problem since I can't reliably replicate it.

I recently upgraded (?) to Opera and get this problem more often than not. I use Firefox to get around it.

If I felt it highly likely that it was entirely a client-side issue I would certainly know better than to post about it here. I'm pretty positive that a RAM shortage isn't an issue; the machines (yes, multiple) were all rather new affairs, running Windows 7 Enterprise; some were 64-bit versions running on i5-2500K CPUs with 8GB of physical memory, and the others were 32-bit using i7-2600K CPUs with 4GB of physical memory. (of which 3GB was actually accessible IIRC)

I've applied a couple of patches this morning that might improve this issue but I'm not 100% sure since I can't reliably replicate the problem to test it.

I had this problem on 2 separate computers with less than 5 tabs open, for several months on end. I had to go into my cookies and manually delete this site's cookies, despite telling Chrome to delete all web history from the beginning of time. I was then able to log in. I don't know if it's a Chrome issue or not. I'm just glad I finally got it working.

I had this issue just now after rejoining.  I had to delete my cookie history and then it was fine.

As an update, I had the weirdest case of it yet; brand-new system with Win7 Ultimate, Latest versions of Opera (12.01) and Chrome (21.0.1180.75) BOTH expressed the issue; at times instead of the same "check your cookie settings" error, it would flat-out claim my password was incorrect, randomly displaying either of the messages upon a login attempt. Cookie-clearing did not fix the issue, even repeatedly, nor did rebooting after said clearing. However, spontaneously, I am somehow already logged in when I arrive the next day.

I am getting the same issue. I find that logging into chat then logging onto the site in a different window solves the issue temporarily

How I solve this problem on Chrome.

Click the wrench. Then settings. Then Show Advanced Settings. Click Cookies. Search for michiganfurs. There are always 2 for me. Delete both manually, and login.

So far I've only found one way to reliably reproduce this issue. If a chat window is still open when someone logs off of the main site this will begin to occur. It seems to be related to session state with the server not properly terminating. Also it seems to happen most regularly with Chrome; I couldn't get IE to do it at all and Firefox only does it part of the time. I'll look for a way to fix this but in the mean time make sure that if you have a chat window open to close it before logging out of the main site.

Win 7 64-bit
I have had this error on all 4 browsers I use(IE, Opera, chrome, and FF), all in the same instance.. I could very well have done the above but I am certain that I open chat immediately and work off of my password being remembered. I do this by putting in the URL for the chat rather than go to the site first off.
When I go to sign in the chat, the chat works fine but when it comes to signing into the site, it gives me the cookie issue. As I stated before this will happen to me no matter which browser I use and the only fix I found was deleting cookies and then waiting a while. I had to restart my session entirely, closing all browser windows.
I have not had this error for a while, but I am glad to give any input possible... I do not run multiple accounts, nor does anyone but me use this computer.

Logging into the chat system separate of the website was never an intended functionality. If you have the chat system directly bookmarked and don't go in through the link on the main page I cannot guarantee the functionality of the website and chat system.
