« on: August 09, 2012, 10:52:31 PM »
Hey everyone I'm selling my trusty old laptop today,

she is a stock model HP71 laptop with 320 Gig HD she is missing the enter key on the normal keyboard but its number pad enter is still there (the key on the normal keysis msing but the rubber button is there.), it also has two stickers on the back that obviously don't affect performance.

my asking price is 400 since it has a fresh win 7 install on it.

Ummm, I paid 399.99 for mine over two years ago.  Same laptop, same OS, and not missing any keys.  https://picasaweb.google.com/shinypuppy/Misc02#5775083728810724450.  So, I'm not sure what angle you're playing at.
I love the little tacos, I love them good.

angle, heh since the original purchase ran me 550 two years ago and then I had to buy a new copy of windows 7 and a HD  for the machine since HP customer service didn't want to assist me after the machine decided to suddenly not register a boot volume i think its fair I try to get back a portion of what I spent for the machine, 550, then 200 then 50 for the HD so all in all 800 spent on the machine asking for little under what I paid initially for it is not to much to ask.

Almost what you paid for it? Then where's the enter key? And why should one pay for two copies of 7 to only get one, or similarly, pay for both hard drives when it only has one?

Also, it's two years old: computer stuff loses value simply by the passage of time, thanks to Moore's Law; since it states technology roughly doubles every 2 years, then it'd stand to reason that prices should halve every two years. After all, you can get a significantly superior HP laptop, with a Core i3 instead of Core 2 Duo that's 100 MHz faster, 2GB more RAM, and a hard drive twice the size, among other things.

Given that the above linked laptop is $569 new, it'd make me scratch my head over why anyone would agree on $800 for an inferior model that isn't just well-used, it's downright damaged. My advice would be to, at most, drop the "double-charge for replaced parts" (you don't pay an extra $2,000 on a used car just because it had to have the transmission replaced, now do you?) and figure Moore's law there, so $275 if you paid $550 for it initially. (or $200 provided the more-likely $399 figure ShinyPuppy mentioned)

Just an FYI according to ehow money when selling a car "make note of possible increases to the cost, such as stereo systems, new paint, new engine, new transmission, or new upholstery, but make allowances for these items as used items" and to also "make note of any possible decreases in cost, such as chipped paint, broken parts, parts needing to be replaced, ripped or damaged items in the car. When doing the decreasing costs, consider the cost to replace it".

So lets see if we do this in computer terms instead of car terms
I paid:
$550.00 original price of laptop bought from an Army PX store in Fort Sil Oklahoma
$60.00 Brand new 320G hard drive bought from Staples store in Butler, Pennsylvania
$200.00 Brand new windows 7 operating system bought from Staples store in Butler, Pennsylvania

So according to Moore's Law
550 / 2 = 275
60 / 2 = 30
200 / 2 = 100
Total $405.00

Now deductions (these are full prices not half price)
$4.95 for replacement 'enter' key that does not include the shipping price. here's the link http://www.replacementlaptopkeys.com/servlet/the-8142/HP-G71-Laptop-Keys/Detail
$5.00 (possibly) to remove the stickers, but it may not cost a thing. If they're hard to remove most household items would help in the removal or you could buy something like 'goo-gone'. Here's a link http://www.wikihow.com/Remove-Stickers-from-a-Laptop

So:
405 - 4.95 = 400.05
400.05 - 5 = 395.05

So in a 'reasonable price' to ask for would be $395.05 (of course that's not including all the software that is currently installed on the machine that I'm not adding in)

But feel free to MAKE AN OFFER.

For 400$ new I can get:
http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0379881 Mostly the same but has a card reader and 500GB drive
http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0388286 Card reader, faster processor, 500GB drive

You'll maybe pull 250 at most.  Replacing a hard drive to get it back to what it would normally come with is NOT an upgrade nor is replacing it with what OS it came with.  All that did was upgrade it from selling as a big electronic paperweight.

Bro, I have this laptop and am quite happy with it but hell if I'm spending 400 on it.  I'd go get me a refurb and call it good.  Also, Windows 7x64 Home Premium has been 99$ OEM since it came out, you paid too much.
I love the little tacos, I love them good.
